تاریخ جهانی یا تاریخ از منظر جهانی به عنوان یک زمینه مطالعات تاریخی، تاریخ را از منظر جهانی بررسی میکند. این حوزه قرنها پیش ظهور کرد و مورخان برجسته این حوزه عبارتند از ولتر (۱۶۹۴–۱۷۷۸)، هگل (۱۷۷۰–۱۸۳۱)، کارل مارکس (۱۸۱۸–۱۸۸۳)، اسوالد اسپنگلر (۱۸۸۰–۱۹۳۶)، و آرنولد جی. توینبی (۱۸۸۹–۱۹۷۵). این رشته در اواخر قرن بیستم بسیار فعال تر شد (از نظر تدریس در دانشگاه، کتابهای درسی، مجلات علمی و انجمنهای دانشگاهی). تاریخ جهانی را با تاریخ تطبیقی که مانند تاریخ جهانی به تاریخ فرهنگها و ملل متعدد میپردازد، اما در مقیاس جهانی چنین نمیکند، نباید اشتباه گرفت. تاریخ جهان به دنبال الگوهای مشترکی است که در همه فرهنگها ظاهر میشود. مورخان جهان از یک رویکرد درونمایهای با دو نقطه کانونی اصلی استفاده میکنند: یکپارچگی و تلفیقگرایی (چگونه فرآیندهای تاریخ جهان مردم جهان را به هم نزدیک کردهاست) و تفاوت (چگونه الگوهای تاریخ جهان تنوع تجربه و شرایط انسانی را آشکار میکند).[۱]
ظهور تاریخ جهانی به عنوان یک رشته تحصیلی متمایز دانشگاهی را میتوان در دهه ۱۹۶۰ میلادی دنبال کرد، اما سرعت پیشرفت آن در دهه ۱۹۸۰ میلادی افزایش یافت.[۲][۳] یک گام کلیدی ایجاد اتحادیه و انجمن تاریخ جهانی[en ۱] و برنامههای تحصیلات تکمیلی در تعداد انگشت شماری از دانشگاهها بود و در طول دهههای بعد، نشریات علمی، سازمانهای حرفهای و دانشگاهی، و برنامههای تحصیلات تکمیلی در تاریخ جهان افزایش یافت. تاریخ جهان اغلب جای تمرکز بر روی تمدن غرب را در برنامه درسی مورد نیاز دبیرستانها و دانشگاههای آمریکا قرار دادهاست و کتابهای درسی جدید رویکردی از این نوع را دارند.
