در حکومت‌های کمونیستی در قرن بیستم کشتارهای جمعی رخ داد که میزان تلفات آن‌ها بین ۸۵ تا ۱۰۰ میلیون تخمین زده می‌شود.[۱] منابع علمی بر علل کشتارهای جمعی در یک جامعه تمرکز می‌کنند، گرچه برخی ادعاها در خصوص علل مشترک کشتارهای جمعی طرح شده‌است. بیشترین کشتارها در اتحاد جماهیر شوروی سوسیالیستی به رهبری ژوزف استالین، در جمهوری خلق چین به رهبری مائو تسه‌تونگ، و در کامبوج به رهبری خمرهای سرخ رخ داده است.
